Developer of the Week at OMSI

IMG_20160319_171440This week I had the opportunity to be Developer of the Week as part of OMSI’s Game Masters exhibit. I got this opportunity through PIGSquad.

I had a fantastic time. I was there all afternoon showing off my game. Kids were playing non-stop from when I set up until it was time to clean up. I got a lot of valuable feedback from both kids and parents on the game. It was great seeing how people played the game, what worked, what didn’t, etc. On top of that, I had many parents who wanted to talk with me to find out how their kids could start learning game development. Many of their kids had interest in the subject, but had no idea where to start. The parents were hugely thankful to get good info on where their kids could start and what they could do.

Indie Game Con

IMG_20151003_130233In the spring, I signed up to participate as an exhibitor at Indie Game Con in Eugene, Oregon. I was quite nervous about doing this. I had a working game, but it was unpolished. Except for showing a game at PIGSquad’s Drink n’ Draw event, I had never shown anything I made at any kind of official event. I had no real idea of what to expect. And while I certainly wasn’t as prepared as I could have been, it still went very well. I had way more people playing my game than I expected. I was able to see quite a few things to fix or change, as well as things to keep or enhance. The response from people that played was great to see. Many people wanted to know how they could get the game, not even realizing it was far, far, far from complete. That was flattering, but also made me realize I need to make it more clear that the game is still in heavy development.

One thing I was not prepared for was how completely exhausting it is to exhibit at game. I was talking almost non-stop the entire day. I had to re-state the same basic litany of explanations about the game. I really understood why it’s important to come up with a succinct pitch for your game. It’s not just so that it’s easy for people to understand your game. It’s also so that you can keep from getting burned out on talking about your game.

I think I’ll write a more complete post specifically about my experience.

Battle of Klovia

I can’t think of a better way to start this site than with the posting of the first game I’ve gotten to a working state since starting Super Green Games.

Even though this game is a work in progress, I’m announcing it here because it will be shown at Monday’s PIGSquad Drink ‘n Draw event. I’m super excited to show it off.

I’ve created an itch.io page for Battle of Klovia. You can find different builds and a gameplay video. Keep in mind that it’s still in development.

I created this game over the recent holidays. It was mostly just a way to stay sharp in Unity and learn a few new things while hanging out with family. It turned out to be a lot of fun to develop, so I kept at it and started polishing it up. I’ll probably take it a bit further, but not too much. I’m already onto a bigger, better, way more exciting project and that’s eating all my attention now.
